Instructions
Using the seven research process steps of selecting our topic and narrowing our research focus from pages 85–86 of the textbook, complete the table using the Unit II Template.
In the worksheet, you will complete the following tasks.
Remember that your research process steps should be specific to you and your interests, location, jurisdiction, and station.
After completing the chart, write your problem and purpose statements, and identify research questions. Then, write a brief background and significance section to justify the research that you are proposing. You should strive to paint a vivid picture of the issue to the readers so they can see the importance of it and why your topic needs to be studied. This section of your submission must be at least one page in length.
Your completed submission, including both sections, must be at least two pages in length, not including the required title and reference pages. It must also contain at least two sources in addition to your textbook. Remember to review the rubric before you begin your essay.
Adhere to APA Style when constructing this assignment, including in-text citations and references for all sources that are used. Please note that no abstract is needed.
Problem Statements and Identification of Research Questions
The seven research process steps topic identification.
Step 1: Identification of a broad field or area of interest.
The field of study involved in this research is Fire fighting
Step 2: Dissection of the broad area into subareas
There are a lot of aspects and issues under the broad area of firefighting. These include; –
i) Response to an emergency.
ii) Staff relationship and cooperation
iii) Public relation
iv) level of technology
v) State of firefighting equipment’s
vi) Location and proximity of the station to the area of service
vii) Personnel skill, and the workforce
viii) Firefighters’ training and seminars
ix) Services available to the public
x) Recruitment and employment of new fire brigades.
Step 3: Selection of what is of most interest to you
From the above subareas, my interest settles down to two which includes,
i) Location and proximity of the station to the area of service
ii) Recruitment and employment of new fire brigades
Step 4: Raising research questions
i) Which part of town is the best for erecting another fire station?
ii) What is the approximate cost for the setting up of the station in that area?
iii) What is the proximity of the station proposed site to town?
iv) What is the state of infrastructure and the accessibility of the site selected?
v) What are the criteria for new firefighter equipment for the new station?
vi) what is the population size and settlement pattern in the proposed area?
Step 5: Formulation of objectives
Main objective
To evaluate site selection, evaluation, and equipment backup requirement; a case study for a
new fire station in (k) town.
Specific objectives
i) To determine the best site for the erection of the new fire station.
ii) To evaluate the initial cost of the project of constructing the new fire station.
iii) To find out the state of infrastructure and accessibility of the site selected.
iv) To determine the availability of required equipment for the new station.
Step 6: Assessments of Objectives
The above-listed specific objectives are achievable. The time required to meet them is available,
and the resources and the technical team are at my disposal. Secondary sources of data
outlining the interviews and use of research questionnaires on the public opinion and demands
will help me meet the first objective of this study. Through the incorporation of the company
financial experts and quantity surveyors articles, the approximate expected cost will be
determined thus meeting objective two. Physical observations report that are done previously
will be used to obtain the data on the state of the infrastructure in the area. Finally, common
ethics of work and the requirements will be assessed through relevant literature already
published in this area of study.
Step 7: Double-checking
Based on the availability of secondary data, I am convinced, that this particular topic
remains to be my choice. By getting the answers to the problem question under this topic there
will be ease of management and operation of the new station as well as the preparation for any
possible emergency during the period or organizing the new station. On the other hand, if this
research is not done then a lot of problems based on the station location, equipment, and
accessibility will trouble the organization. Moreover, the data received on the expected cost of
construction if not looked into as by this research then there is a possibility of the move being
retarded and even misuse of funds may arise.
Problem and purpose statements
In every expansion process by a company, there is a need of analyzing the conditions of the
working environment in question before establishing the operations in that area (Chaudhary et
al., 2016). One of the most critical parts in any planting of another branch or station of a firm is the
evaluation of the proposed site (Ibid). These two statements create a need for the evaluation of
the proposed site for the new fire station in town
This research process steps will help the organization to affirm the success of the new firm to be erected.
Failure to meet these objectives or the whole research then the resultant station may be built yes,
but accessibility and accessibility may make its operation to be drudgery. In addition to that the
required cost of the project when already determined through this research then it will be easier to
plan for the setting up of the fire station. This research process steps aim to meet the specific and
the overall objective of the study, with sufficient data to affirm the findings and give relevant
recommendations and conclusions which will be of great importance to the company.
Background and the significance of the research
Fire fighting began in the 1700s in the cities of the United States. It was not until around 1880
that municipality started paying the firemen, previously it was solely based on a voluntary act. It
also started as a privately operated organization in some countries of Europe (Anderson, 1979).
Since then all over the globe, there has been steady growth in firefighting companies as well as
the operational tools and equipment.
By the year 2018, the number of firefighting companies in the US alone hit 29,705 departments.
With over a million volunteers that work as firefighters, besides career firefighters. (Evarts and
Stein, 2020). Fire fighting departments are also erected in various states and cities for any
emergency. The apparatus used and stations have also increased with time to thousands (Ibid).
From the model of the US clearly, the trend in the worldwide scale can be traced. The current state
of the world indicates that more fire departments well as modern equipment are
required. this is due to the increased incidences of fire out brakes and loos of lives due to the fires.
(Barefoot et al., 2019).
With the steady increase in urbanization and the blooming population growth, there is a need to
redistribute the fire stations and back up the firefighter’s machinery for efficient execution of
their services. This made a gap for this research problem as we look forward to building another
station in town to help meet the increasing dependence state of the society. In the pursuit of
where and how to build the new station, there arises the need for the research on-site selection,
evaluation, and equipment backup; a case study for a new fire station in (k) town.
