Double Indemnity Paper details:
My thesis for this essay is, “The characters in Cain’s Double Indemnity utilize the concept of insurance in differing ways to propel their own, individual lives forward.”
Below, I’ve also included the grading rubric, and, requirements for this essay.
First Essay Assignment: James M. Cain’s Double Indemnity. Final Draft Due: Monday, July 12 by 5:00 p.m. For your first essay assignment, you are to type a double-spaced analysis of at least two full pages in length focusing on James M. Cain’s Double Indemnity. Because this assignment asks you to write analytically, the first item to note is that you should not write a plot summary, essentially telling the reader what happens in the novel. Instead, focus on an issue of critical importance-for instance, a character or dynamic between characters; a theme or other central issue with which the novel grapples; maybe a symbol; perhaps the setting; or some other issue of relevance to our understanding of Cain’s novel and what it’s trying to convey. As this is an academic use formal language, structure, and mechanics, and strive to stay on point in organized fashion, with a clearly distinguishable and rhythmic beginning (introduction), middle (body), and end (conclusion). Equally important will be to launch your essay from a clearly stated argument, or thesis, which you should include in your introduction. Following this, devote the body of your essay to developing your argument through effective use of evidence from the text (not outside sources). In using evidence, you are encouraged to incorporate quotes from the novel and to use paraphrase and summary when needed. You will select your own topic and focus for this assignment. As you do, keep in mind the key issues that you’ve encountered in reading the novel and in reviewing the questions, and try ultimately to think beyond the page-to consider the deeper meaning(s) beyond the surface level of the plot. Lastly, don’t forget to include a catchy and creative title, which should be centered above the introductory paragraph of your essay. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me! Grading for the Assignment
