## SDS Activity and Metric Conversions

1. Choose one of the following Safety Data Sheets (SDS) Metric Conversions and answer the following questions. In each case, also indicate the SDS section number that contained the relevant information.

Dimensional Analysis

Single unit conversion

or

Double unit conversion

or

How to read: 1 prefix unit = ____ base units

Example: 5 Gbyte = 5×109 bytes

• Complete each of the following conversions and maintain the same number of s.f.
1. 0.0007836 g à µg
• 25.82 g à kg
• 37.1 × 10-6 cm à nm

Hint: cm à m à nm

• 1000 ml à dm3 (4 sf)
• 342 mm2 à nm2

Hint:    10 mm = 1cm

(10 mm)2 = (1cm)2

100 mm2 = 1cm2

1. Convert34 mph to km/h. Hint: does mph contain 1 or 2 measurement units?
• Convert32.0 dm s-1 to km h-1
• Calculate the mass of 16.0 fluid ounces of milk. Density of milk = 1.03 g/ml, 1 fl. oz. = 29.6 ml.
• Convert 9.85 dm3 to ml.

Evaluation of Significant Figures

• Indicate the number of significant figures in each number (some may have more than one answer):

a.  307.60 g           ____________                        b.  250 mL       ______________

c.  0.00256 m        ____________                        d.  10.00 mL   ______________

• Round each of the numbers to the indicated number of significant figures AND write the number in scientific notation:

a.  36000 (3)    _______________                  b.  0.00752689 (4)       ______________

c.  319 (2)        _______________                  d.  0.19850 (3)            ______________

• Make each of the calculations and round the answers to the correct number of significant figures (s.f.):
1. 3.58g/1.739 ml
• 4.03 ml + 0.001 ml
• (1.345 g + 0.022 g)/(13.36 ml – 8.4115 ml)
• (210 ×10-4)2 (78.201 × 10-5)-3
